Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care offers a holistic perspective, addressing the body as an interconnected system. Chiropractors focus on the proper alignment and optimal function of the musculoskeletal system to both treat existing injuries and prevent future ones.

Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The therapeutic focus is on the bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and the nervous system for all parts of the body.  The goal of this procedure, also known as spinal manipulation, is to improve spinal motion and improve your body’s physical function.

The bases of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can offer several health benefits, including:

  • Easing back pain
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Minimizing headaches and migraines
  • Improving sleep
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Boosting immune system
  • Increased range of motion of joints
  • Decreased muscle tension or spasm
  • Improved nerve communication
  • Improve coordination, physical function and posture

Everyone can benefit from chiropractic care from newborn babies to the elderly, to pregnant women and athletes.

Examples of conditions treated

  • Back and neck pain
  • Head Injuries (concussions/whiplash/headaches)
  • Shoulder injuries (i.e. rotator cuff tears, tendonitis)
  • Elbow and wrist injuries/pain (i.e. tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Foot and/or ankle injuries (i.e. plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis)
  • Pregnancy-related pain- pre and post-pregnancy
  • Joint sprains or instability
  • Sports injuries
  • Disc herniations and sciatica

Specialized Treatment Areas

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes – they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole – and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

Analysis

The symptoms of poor foot mechanics can be an indication you may need orthotics. Here are the symptoms to look out for:

  • Localized foot pain
  • Bunions, hammer toes
  • Arch/heel pain
  • Leg/knee pain
  • Hip or back pain – even neck pain

We use a newly developed state of the art 3D camera technology to assess your gait from standing to walking.

The resulting image helps to determine any abnormalities or imbalances that may be contributing to foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain.  The analysis helps inform the design and customization of orthotics.  The goal of this process is to improve your biomechanical alignment, reduce discomfort and enhance mobility.

Chiropractors utilize an array of hands-on techniques to address injuries:

  • Spinal adjustments – Apply controlled force to restore alignment and nerve function
  • Soft tissue therapy – Relieve muscle tightness and spasms to improve circulation
  • Rehabilitative stretches and exercises – Gradually strengthen injured areas and improve flexibility
  • Lifestyle advice – Recommendations on nutrition, rest, and prevention strategies

These methods work together to accelerate healing while enabling athletes to get back in the game safely.  Some key advantages of chiropractic care include:

  • Treating root causes of pain and imbalance
  • Improving range of motion and flexibility
  • Relieving muscle tension and stiffness
  • Enhancing performance and efficiency of movement
  • Shortening injury recovery time
  • Reducing risk of re-injury
  • Complementing training and conditioning programs

Chiropractic care successfully addresses many typical sports injuries:

  • Sprains and strains – Joint and muscle injuries benefit from adjustments and soft tissue therapy.
  • Concussions – Spinal alignment and concussion management facilitate recovery.
  • Knee injuries – Targeted exercises and adjustments provide relief.
  • Back injuries – Spinal adjustments and core strengthening exercises are key.

These are just some examples of the wide range of injuries that respond well to chiropractic treatment.

Beyond injury recovery, chiropractic care offers performance-boosting benefits. Regular sessions promote proper spinal alignment and biomechanics for increased efficiency of movement. Other enhancements include:

  • Improved joint flexibility and range of motion
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Heightened balance and coordination
  • Faster injury recovery
  • Reduced risk of future injuries

By supporting the neuromusculoskeletal system, chiropractic care helps athletes achieve their full potential.

There are several reasons why pediatric chiropractic care can be beneficial for children. To begin, health issues that affect babies and children may follow them as they grow into adulthood. The body has the great ability to adapt as children grow, however, underlying issues are likely to create compensations that cover up the original concern. Overtime, these compensations can add up and affect a child’s health throughout their lifetime.

If your child has had any of the following in their health history, an examination by a pediatric chiropractor is essential to determine the extent of spinal weakness and nervous system injury.

Feeding Issues

This includes things like tongue or lip restrictions, difficulty turning head to nurse, arching or pulling away in discomfort, difficulty opening mouth, “ratchety” type head and neck movements with frequent unlatching at the breast or when turned to nurse at a bottle.

Colic

This is characterized by inconsolable crying. This crying is often in the evening and lasts for more than 3 hours per day. Additionally, it occurs more than 3 days per week, for more than 3 weeks. Children with colic may also exhibit other symptoms such as gas, bloating, hiccups and spit-up.

Posture

Persistent postural habits or repetitively returning to a preferred position are often symptomatic of underlying spinal and nervous system problems. This also includes only being able to nurse in a certain position (football hold, for example) or being bottle fed while being held on one side only.

Reflux

Reflux is a condition in which stomach contents flow back up into the esophagus, causing pain, heartburn and other symptoms.

Sleep Problems

This includes difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep, mouth breathing or snoring, and nighttime awakening. Additionally, this can also include bedwetting.

Cranial Asymmetries

These are often caused by intrauterine constraint, birth trauma or postural compensations and can lead to feeding difficulties. Further, it can lead to torticollis (wry neck), and plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome).

Tummy Trouble

Intense dislike or distress during “tummy time,” frequent spitting up, constipation, diarrhea and other bowel irregularities.

Joint Issues

Hip dysplasia, club foot, or other joint issues that were present at birth or have developed since.

Scoliosis

This is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that can develop in children. Although this is the case, early detection and treatment of scoliosis is important to prevent progression of the curve.

Trauma

Trauma such as falls off of changing tables, beds, quick jerks or stops (pushes and pulls by older siblings), car accidents (even fender benders)

Clumsiness

Clumsiness, one foot or leg that sits more outwardly than the other, gait abnormalities and balance problems.

Pregnant women can also benefit from chiropractic care. Pregnancy places a significant amount of stress on the body. Regular adjustments can help ensure a smoother pregnancy and delivery. Chiropractors who specialize in prenatal care are experts in relieving discomfort. Additional benefits of prenatal chiropractic care include the reduction in the risk of stretch marks and help to prepare the body for labor.

In fact, chiropractic care is a safe, effective practice during pregnancy. Not only can routine chiropractic care help manage pain in your back, hips, and joints, it can also establish pelvic balance. That can provide your baby with as much space as possible over the course of your pregnancy. This may lead to a faster, easier labor and delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe when performed by a registered chiropractor. Your first visit will include a thorough examination to diagnose your condition and determine if chiropractic care is appropriate for you. A chiropractor will only proceed with adjustments if it is deemed safe and beneficial.

Chiropractic adjustments are highly refined manual techniques, developed through years of training and practice. They involve precise, controlled movements to adjust joints—especially in the spine—to reduce pain, restore balance, and improve mobility.

Treatments are tailored to the individual and may include mobilization, spinal manipulation, physical therapy, soft tissue work, exercises, and guidance on posture and overall health.

The popping or cracking sound you may hear during a chiropractic adjustment is completely normal and is called cavitation or tribonucleation. This sound occurs when gases shift inside the joint, typically from a change in pressure.

It’s important to note that the absence of this sound does not mean the adjustment was unsuccessful. The noise is not associated with pain and may not always be heard or felt during an adjustment. Regardless of whether the sound occurs, the adjustment is still effective and properly performed.

Chiropractic adjustments are generally gentle and not painful. While most patients experience immediate relief, a small number may experience mild soreness or stiffness, particularly after the first few treatments. This is normal and usually resolves quickly.

If you experience any post-treatment discomfort, we encourage you to contact the clinic. One of our practitioners will speak with you directly and help address any concerns, ensuring you’re comfortable and informed throughout the process.

In most cases, custom orthotics are covered to some extent if ordered by a licensed Chiropractor. However, coverage varies by plan, and we do not have access to specific policy details. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your visit to confirm your coverage.

If your plan covers custom orthotics, you will need to pay the full cost upfront at the clinic and manually submit the receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Please note that we are unable to direct bill any extended health plan for custom orthotics.

It is normal to experience some mild discomfort when first wearing orthotics as your feet and body adjust to the new support and alignment. However, they should not cause significant pain.

To ease the transition, we recommend gradually increasing wear time—starting with a few hours a day and slowly working up to full-time use. If discomfort persists beyond a couple of weeks or becomes painful, it may indicate that adjustments are needed. In that case, please reach out to the clinic in order to schedule you in for an adjustment.

Custom orthotics typically last between one to five years, depending on factors such as usage and activity level. It’s important to monitor for signs of wear and tear, such as flattening, cracking, or discomfort while wearing them. If you notice these signs, or if your symptoms return, it may be time for a replacement. Regular check-ups with your practitioner can help ensure your orthotics continue to provide optimal support.
